Opinion: Parishville resident voices concerns about Stefanik

To the Editor:

As the midterms approach, I urge everyone to consider if Elise Stefanik is the best representative for our district or not. Look at her voting record and review her social media to determine who priorities.

I understand that some people consider their party affiliation as part of their identity and nothing will make them reconsider who they support. I’m a registered Independent, my identity is that of parent, teacher, and landowner. I don’t fall for all the ‘Vote Red’ or ‘Vote Blue’ hype. I support who will make my life, and my elderly parents’ lives, easier. Therefore, I have concerns about reelecting Elise Stefanik.

In the last year, Stefanik has voted against bills that would help us. She voted NO to:

The Right to Contraception Act (why would she vote against access to birth control?)

The Women’s Health Protection Act

Active Shooter Alert Act

Safer Communities Act

Protecting Our Kids Act

Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Act

Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act

Infant Formula Supplemental Act

Firefighters Fairness Act

Restaurant Revitalization Act

Affordable Insulin Act

Freedom to Vote Act

Protecting our Democracy Act

Infrastructure Investment Act

Family Violence Protection Act

There are more, but these could have the biggest impact on NY21. I’ve contacted her to ask why she voted against them, I’ve never received a response. Her public calendar is empty until after the midterms. She apparently does not want to answer questions from her constituents.

To gauge what her priorities are, I’ve checked her social media accounts. Her Twitter feed makes it clear that if she’s reelected and Republicans win the House, the next two years will be nothing but seeking revenge against the Biden Administration – how is that going to help us? I ask you – is that what you want to for the next two years? How is the republican agenda of hate and divisiveness going to improve our daily lives?

I can think of no reasons why Stefanik should be reelected. She’s failed at this job and her constituents need a representative who will make the people of Northern NY the priority. Her challenger, Matt Castelli, is holding open forums across the district. He’s inviting residents ask questions. NY21 is unique and deserves a representative who is accessible, will answer questions, put the needs of NY21 above their own political aspirations, and will support legislation that improves our lives, even if it was proposed by the other side.
