Opinion: Ogdensburg voter supports Engle for county sheriff

As many already know, the citizens of St. Lawrence County will soon be voting for a new Sheriff. The two candidates running this race will face off in a Republican primary on June 27. If you are not yet registered to vote, the deadline to register and vote in that primary is June 17. Definitely don't wait until then, though. Register today.

Many SLC politicians would like you to think that the current undersheriff will be your next county sheriff. You have a chance in June to deliver an important reminder: They are not the ones who decide. We the People choose. Our state is headed in the wrong direction and it is time for a real change, not more of the same.

A sheriff is set apart from all other law enforcement officials as they are directly accountable to the citizens who elect them. Just like no one individual hires or fires the county sheriff, no one person or group has the authority to interfere with their office. Preserving this office is very important.

Before voting in June, ask yourself which candidate would refuse to abdicate their responsibilities, duties, or management rights to other governmental entities, unions, or political influence. Again, a sheriff stands directly accountable to citizens for the quality of service their office brings.

Every single law enforcement union in this county who voted to endorse a candidate chose Rick Engle. He is a veteran, a man with integrity, a strong leader, and will make a fantastic county sheriff.
