Opinion: Make St. Lawrence County sanctuary for 2nd Amendment, says Canton resident

“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Over the past year or so, extremist gun control laws have exploded in several states, primarily as a result of urban majorities riding roughshod over their rural neighbors. Many of these laws have their roots in hysteria stemming from tragedies that these laws themselves would not have prevented.

In response to the growing Anti-Constitution sentiment, many counties across this country, and even some entire states, have passed resolutions declaring themselves to be sanctuaries for the 2nd Amendment; declaring that their governments will not support or enforce unconstitutional laws. Individual firearm owners are also coming forward stating that they will not comply with laws that infringe upon their constitutional rights. This 2nd Amendment sanctuary movement is about standing up for the supreme law of the land, even when agenda-driven politicians will not.

In light of the recent county support for the lawsuit against Michael Bloomberg and the City of New York filed by New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, and of the county’s known and open opposition to the SAFE Act, we the people who support the Constitution of the United States feel it is time to act.

It is time we recognize that we are Americans first, and that we must stand up to those politicians in Albany that do not have our rights and freedom foremost in their hearts. As such, we the firearm owners of Saint Lawrence county, humbly and sincerely, ask the County Legislature, at its earliest convenience, declare this county a sanctuary county for the 2nd Amendment and those who wish to assert their right to bear arms.
