Opinion: Judge candidate is kind, fair-minded, hardworking, says former SLC attorney

I'm an attorney who formerly practiced in Saint Lawrence County until a few years ago. I've always been a Democrat, and a pretty far-left one at that. Despite that, I write this letter to registered Republicans in support of Gregory Storie, who's running in the Republican primary for county court judge.

I've known Greg for the full time that he's been an attorney in Saint Lawrence County, which is over a decade. I know him to always be a professional, thoughtful and dutiful lawyer; he's hardworking, smart and kind.

Greg and I differ politically, as you might expect, but we're still friends, no doubt because we share the same sense of humor. One of our differences, though, is that Greg is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.

He has always explained gun rights to me as a recognition of rural, farming realities. Farms need firearms: if your cow, or horse, or peacock, or camel (I've seen 'em all at his home over the years) is too injured for a vet or is too old to carry on, it's your compassionate duty to end that suffering without delay; rural homesteads far from police stations need a pistol with a trained user.

Up until last week I was in favor of a repeal of the Second Amendment, but seeing how peaceful protesters get savaged these days by over-armed law enforcement dispatched by an appallingly callow President makes me think differently. Greg and I may well end up on the same side of that issue, but for quite different reasons.

One thing I know for sure is that Greg is fair-minded, he's of an even temperament, and he has dead good instincts for what's true and what's not. He's also modest, which is unlike most I know who seek office.

Were I in the shoes of a registered Republican, I'd clearly find honorable Greg Storie to be that party's genuine candidate for presiding over county court.
