Opinion: District 12 Legislator candidate talks Second Amendment rights

To the Editor:

A a letter to the editor of North Country Now, dated April 22, 2022, Hank Ford, the current Chairman of the St. Lawrence Conservative party, gives his “personal” endorsement for the reelection of John Burke as legislator for District 12. Mr. Ford explains his reasons why but they are contrary to the actual record of Mr. Burke.

Mr. Ford’s first statement is that Legislator John Burke is a “strong supporter of the Second Amendment. “ This is not true. Public records will show that John Burke voted NO on two very important resolutions that were in support of gun rights for the citizens of this county and NYS. These cases were argued before the Supreme Court. The first, a “Resolution Joining the State of Louisiana and others supported the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association V. New York City”. The case concerned whether licensed pistol owners in NYC had the right to take their firearms out of the city to another county, camp, hunting or another shooting range. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of gun owners. John Burke voted against the resolution on the 4/1/19 SLC Board meeting.

The second resolution where John Burke voted NO and against the Second Amendment again, was on 8/23/21 when “A resolution joining various States in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association V. Bruen” was discussed and voted on. This case was again heard by the Supreme Court. Only two legislators, liberal Margaret Haggard and John Burke , voted against this resolution which furthers the fight for the full rights of the Second Amendment for the citizens of St. Lawrence County. The decision will be made public this summer.

I, Renee Azzopardi, am running to replace Legislator John Burke in District 12. I fully support the Second Amendment. I fully support the rights of gun owners, hunters and sportsman whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Conservationists or an independent. I Believe in our Constitutional Republic, please consider a vote for me as your Legislator for District 12.
