Opinion: Clarkson extends gratitude to SLC community for support

Clarkson wishes to extend it's since appreciation to the greater St. Lawrence County community for joining the university in hosting the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series’ Northeast Regional Tournament presented by Bass Pro Shops in Potsdam and Waddington this past week!

With Clarkson’s Bass Fishing Club, our entire community was all very much a part of making hundreds of collegiate anglers, their families, and bass fishing enthusiasts feel welcomed to the North Country – many for the first time. In addition to being a tournament for the College Series’ record books, together we showed these competitors and fans what a great place this is to live, work, study, visit and fish.

This event could not have happened without the support of New York State, our elected representatives and many people and organizations committed to the vitality of St. Lawrence County and the region.

We want to share our public thanks to: the Village of Waddington including Mayor Janet Otto-Cassada, the Waddington Department of Public Works and Waddington Fire Department; the Village of Potsdam including Mayor Ron Tischler and the Potsdam Fire Department; the New York State Troopers; the Coast Guard Auxiliary units for the St. Lawrence River; the New York Department of Environmental Conservation including their River police unit; Air Force and Army ROTC; the New York Power Authority; the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce; the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce; SUNY ESF Prof. Brian Farrell and Clarkson Prof. Tom Holsen from the Clarkson –SUNY ESF Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions; and Clarkson Prof. Michael Twiss, president of the International Association of Great Lakes Researchers and his graduate student Evie Brahmstedt.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the many volunteers who supported events at Whittaker Park in Waddington and our campus in Potsdam; the local news reporters and editors for their diligent media coverage; the many local businesses, hotels, motels, and residents that pulled out the red carpet for the anglers; and to members of the community who came to the early morning launches and afternoon weigh-ins to cheer on the anglers.

Finally, a special thanks to B.A.S.S. for choosing Clarkson and Waddington to host a College Series tournament this year on the St. Lawrence River. We will see you all August 15-18, 2019 for the Elite Series in Waddington!
