To the Editor:
Rene Azzopardi is someone who got caught in an information mix-up. Some public information showed her claiming to be Authorized by the Conservative Party. The St. Lawrence County Conservative Party did not release that information, but later we did respond to it, saying she was not Authorized. She agrees she is not authorized. So, what is the problem?
Also, Azzopardi did get a call from me telling her she would not be endorsed. Our policy is that endorsed candidates get emails and letters, and non-endorsed candidates get phone calls. We feel that it is better to break it gently. So, she did not get an email or letter.
Unfortunately, Azzopardi continues to spread misinformation about her opponent. John Burke, has ably represented District 12 for many years. He is a staunch 2nd Amendment advocate, but not a blind one. The 2 Legislature resolutions he voted against were measures that committed St. Lawrence County funds to multi-state and NYC lawsuits. These lawsuits could bring scant benefit to St. Lawrence County voters, and obligated them to spend tax dollars.
Old school Legislature politics: When elected as Chairman of the Board, the old school Republican members refused to caucus with John because he wouldn’t take their orders. He was elected to represent District 12, and he intended to do what he was elected to do. Mr. Burke then caucused with the Democrats. Who else could he caucus with? He never became a Democrat, nor embraced their liberal attitudes. Burke is ever mindful of the tax-payer’s wallet. One of the reasons St. Lawrence County now has a balanced budget is because John has an eagle eye on spending.
Come June 28th, voters in District 12 make your mark next to John Burke’s name. He stood up for your interests in the Legislature despite the old school politics. He does not blindly follow others, but listens to you and pursues fiscal conservativism.
Tom Daly, Secretary
St. Lawrence County Conservative Party
