Opinion: Athletes create memories, bonds during football scrimmage, says Potsdam coach

I have had the honor of coaching our North Country athletes for many years. In that time there have been many high points. In speaking with fellow coaches, these moments are becoming more rare. That is why I am writing this letter in thanks to the coaches and players who were involved in a scrimmage that took place last week at Potsdam Central.

We could not have been prouder the way the players carried themselves, not just in effort and sportsmanship, as I always expect, but in some unexpected and more important ways. It was great to see our most skilled players working with and helping those who needed it and cheering them on.

You are not going to see any of the plays on ESPN highlights, but what they did was far more important. They helped create cherished memories for kids who are not as fortunate to have as many. The smile on everyone's faces and kindness shown comes at a needed time.

Thanks to the Potsdam, Canton and St. Lawrence Central players, coaches and friends for a great day. As one of the coaches said, "It sounds good to hear the kids having fun again."
