Opinion: Canton judge candidate cites criminal justice experience

To the Editor:

My name is Rachelle Foster and I am running for the position of Canton Town Justice. I have lived in the Town of Canton for over twenty years and have a vested interest in the well being and safety of our community. I have built my career and raised my family here. With the support of my husband, Frederick Foster, and my three children, I look forward to serving the people of the Town of Canton.

During my State Police career I handled criminal cases involving sex abuse, child abuse, robbery, burglary, assault and homicide. While assigned to the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit as an evidence technician, I gained extensive training in the collection and examination of forensic evidence.

I understand the importance of evidence in criminal trials. I gained further experience when I was assigned to the New York State Police Narcotics Unit and saw first hand the detriment to society that drugs can cause. I have experience with criminal court procedures, testimony, defense and prosecution.

It is time for a change. Our judges need to be available at all hours of the day and night, not just on scheduled court days. If I am elected, I will be available to serve justice when called upon. As a judge, I will endeavor to analyze and understand all evidence and factual information presented to the court and make decisions based on law, without bias and with the safety of the community and victims in mind. I wish to be a “Judge for All People.”

Recently, there has been a loss of faith in the criminal justice system. If elected, I would work hard to restore that faith by bringing dignity and equality to my courtroom. I would make sure that each case was handled in an efficient, sensible and professional manner.

In closing, I would like to say that I have dedicated a majority of my life to law enforcement and the criminal justice system. I feel very fortunate to have been able to do so and I look forward to continuing on that path.

I believe my long and extensive experience in the criminal justice system makes me the best candidate for the position of Town of Canton Justice.

Please vote for me,

Rachelle Foster
