As the Potsdam Village Board begins to grapple with whether or not to replace a position on the village police force, it is worth noting that in 2010, then Police Chief John Kaplan estimated that 50 percent of village police service could be directly attributed to college students.
Perhaps it is time for the administrators of both Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam to step up to the plate and accept some portion of the financial burdens imposed on village residents by inebriated students.
Surely the fiscal responsibility for protecting students from themselves rightfully belongs to the colleges they attend, not the residents of Potsdam.
