Advocate for phone-free roads speaks to local St. Lawrence County students

Five St. Lawrence County schools (Ogdensburg Free Academy, Heuvelton Central School, Hermon-DeKalb Central School, Clifton-Fine Central School, and Harrisville Central School) had the privilege of hosting Jacy Good and her husband Steve Johnson, who are national public speakers and advocates for phone-free roads. The event was a free event paid by the National Highway Safety Administration through a grant from the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Administration and SADD National.

May 18th, 2008 was meant to be one of the best days for Jacy Good, but that all changed, on her way home from her college graduation when Jacy’s family vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler who swerved to avoid a teen who was on his mobile phone, resulting in the death of her parents and leaving Jacy partially paralyzed on her left side. They now speak about their personal journeys of healing, in the hopes of raising awareness about the very preventable risks of using a cell phone behind the wheel. Along with their individual stories, they explain some of the brain science that debunks the myth of “multitasking.”

Jacy and Steve have traveled to 41 States, visited 3 different countries, and spoken at 1042 events. As well as appeared on Oprah, Say Yes to the Dress (TLC) and ran a PSA though AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign. They work tirelessly to educate as many people about the dangers of distracted driving in the hopes that it may touch at least one person and safe a life.

St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety would like to extend a thank you to the hosting schools as well to Jacy and Steve for coming to the North County to help spread the message.
