POTSDAM -- Potsdam Elks Lodge #2074 has named Janice Adderley of Potsdam as their Citizen of the Year for 2018-2019.

Adderly was awarded the citizenship award for “exceeding the duties and obligations as an outstanding community citizen. As a member of the Potsdam Community, she has been eager to volunteer and represent the Potsdam Community with dignity and grace,” the club said in an announcement.

“She is a very determined individual who is genuine and caring and who takes personal pride in everything she does,” former Potsdam Elks exalted ruler William Henry Jr. said in a prepared statement.

Some of Adderly’s accomplishments include being named president of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce from 2010-2011 and 2018-2019. She serves on the board of directors and on the event and festival committees, which plan the Potsdam Summer Festival.

“Janice has played an instrumental role in securing sponsors for the Summerfest Firework the past few years. In recent years, Janice saw the need for an Outer Market Street Festival during the Summerfest that included businesses not affiliated with the downtown area. She was able to assist with the development of Outer market Mania. This is a free event for children and families. The event included games with prizes, a clown show, as well as a Touch a Truck Event,” the release said.

Adderley has been a 19-year volunteer for the Hobble Gobble prediction run/walk race. In 2010, she became the event’s assistant director. Her responsibilities included mailings, setting up the event and designing t-shirt logos each year. The major beneficiary of the event was the Potsdam Holiday Fund and donations were also made each year to food pantries throughout the North Country.

Adderley and Amanda Fonda also started a philanthropy project for their employees at the UPS Store in Potsdam. They established a food drive to benefit the Potsdam Snack Pack Program. This program provides healthy snacks and lunch items to more than 250 young students in need each week.

Since 2017, Adderley has served as the chapter advisor for her sorority, Alpha Sigma Tau. She is also a member of the American Legion.
