Massena Central Hall of Fame honors new class of sports standouts

MASSENA -- The 30th annual Massena Central School Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony recently installed six individuals and three girls soccer teams in the ceremony at the school, which was followed by a reception at the Massena Fire Hall.

Those honored were:

• Patrick Austin, who began working with several Red Raider teams in 1982 as an unofficial unpaid coach and general team assistant, which he continues to do to this day. He was honored for participating "with unselfishness and dedication."

• Angelina Arcadi Converse, Class of 2001, was an outstanding volleyball, basketball and soccer player. Her volleyball career was capped off in her senior year when she was named team captain, team MVP, Section X Co-MVP, and NYS Sportswriters Association All-State Class A 1st Team member. She won the rookie award in basketball in her freshman year, In her senior year, she was named team captain, MCHS Team Leader Award winner, and winner of the first Katie O'Shaugnessy Award. She was named the soccer team's Most Improved player in her junior and senior years.

• Bekki Arcadi Levis, Class of 1998, who was volleyball team captain, top setter and top server in her junior and senior years, MVP as a junior and Co-MVP as a senior. She played varsity basketball for four years, and varsity soccer for three years, receiving numerous awards. Each year she received Academic All Northern and NYS Scholar Athlete recognition.

• Marc Derouchie, Class of 1986, a standout hockey player, dominated Section X as a forward in his senior year: 40 goals, 42 assists, six hat tricks, named to several All Tournament rosters, All Northern First Team and Watertown Times All North Team, and team MVP.

• Mike Hurlbut, Class of 1984, was a two-time All Northern hockey defenseman, and Team MVP and assistant captain in his senior year. He was on the 1982 state championship team and the 1983 state finalist team. In his three years as a defenseman, he proved to be a serious offensive threat, scoring 48 goals and 60 assists.

• Nathan Pichette, Class of 2009, was a three-sport athlete, on baseball, soccer and hockey teams. He was an All Northern and All Academic baseball team honoree in 2008-2009, In three years on the soccer team, he was First Team All Northern, NAC MVP, Team Captain, NAC All Academic Team, Watertown, Daily Times All Northern, 2007, 2008, 2009 All Academic Team. In three years of varsity hockey, he was recognized as a member of the NYS Championship Team State High School Hockey First Team, All NAC First Team, NAC MVP and Leading Scorer, Watertown Daily Times All North Team, Team Captain, and All Academic Teams.

Teams that were honored were:

• Girls Soccer, who attained a "three-peat" in 2005 (17-1-3), 2006 (19-2), and 2007 (17-4-1), winning league championships, and many, many other honors for the girls and Coach Tim Ahlfeld.
