The Massena Artists Association is pleased to announce that Bill Parmer of Winthrop has been named Artist of the Year for 2010-11. This award is based on the three large oil paintings that he submitted to MAA’s Annual Membership Art Exhibit, entitled “The Road to Parishville,” “The McKensie Range in the Fall,” and “The Creek in Early Spring.”

Bill has been painting seriously only for 2 ½ years. He has always enjoyed art, and credits his high school art teacher, as well as Alan Goldstein who was his instructor in a long ago art course at Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania, with inspiring him.

He has taken various other art courses over the past 40 years or so.

But mundane things like earning a living and serving 2 tours of duty in the military got in the way of a budding career in art.

He is a veteran of both Viet Nam and Desert Storm. His duties as an Army medic helped him discover an interest in healing.

He entered nursing school, and became an LPN. Further study earned him an RN degree, and eventually certification as a Nurse Practitioner.

He has been working as a Nurse Practitioner for 13 years.

Originally from Pennsylvania, he moved to the North Country 35 years ago.

He lives in beautiful downtown Buckton, a hamlet on the banks of the St. Regis River between Winthrop and Fort Jackson.

He primarily paints landscapes. Scenes of the mountains, forests, streams and back roads of the Adirondacks and the rural North Country are his favorites.

His favorite medium is oil, but he has also worked in watercolor and acrylic.

He has entered his paintings in previous MAA juried art exhibits, where he has been an award winner.

He looks forward to retiring in a few years, so that he can devote more time to painting, and explore an interest in wildlife art.
