Farzad Mahmoodi has been named the Joel Goldschein '57 Endowed Chair in Global Supply Chain Management at Clarkson University.

Mahmoodi is a professor of operations management and director of Clarkson's nationally ranked Global Supply Chain Management program, which has been ranked as one of the top-20 supply chain management programs in the nation by U.S News & World Report for 10 consecutive years.

"Farzad has been the driving force in global supply chain management education at Clarkson University," said Business School Dean Timothy F. Sugrue. "It is great to see his diligence recognized by this generous gift from the Goldschein family."

"It is quite an honor to be named the Joel Goldschein '57 Endowed Chair in Global Supply Chain Management," said Mahmoodi. "The Goldschein family's generosity underpins the importance of Clarkson's global supply chain management program and the future of multi-disciplinary education here."

Mahmoodi received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1982, his master of science in industrial engineering in 1983, and his Ph.D. in industrial engineering in 1989, all from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis.

At Clarkson, he has served as the director of graduate and undergraduate business programs, as well as the associate dean for graduate and executive programs. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in supply chain management, global sourcing and supply chain design, quality management and process control, statistical quality control, operations and production management, and design of experiments since 1989.

Mahmoodi's research interests are in supply chain systems design and management, shop floor control and scheduling of cellular and flexible manufacturing systems, quality management, and systems modeling and simulation.

He has published approximately 50 articles in a variety of edited books and leading journals, such as Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences Journal, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, International Journal of Management Science-Omega and International Journal of Production Economics. Mahmoodi serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Industrial Engineering, and International Journal of Integrated Supply Management.

He has also presented papers at numerous national and international conferences, and has performed consulting projects for several Fortune 500 and mid-size companies.

Mahmoodi has been involved in executive education for more than two decades and has regularly taught graduate and executive level courses in the United States, Canada and France. He has served as Clarkson's director of engineering and global operations management graduate program for working professionals, as well as the director of the supply chain management executive seminars --attended by hundreds of supply chain professionals representing more than 60 companies, including some 30 Fortune 500 companies.

He was inducted into Phalanx (Clarkson's highest honorary society) in 2004, and has been the recipient of the 2007, 2010 and 2011 Professor of the Year Award (MBA Module), the 2004 Commendable Leadership Award, the 1998 Clarkson University Distinguished Teaching Award, the 1995 Clarkson University John W. Graham Jr. Faculty Research Award, the 1995 and 1997 School of Business Faculty Leadership Award, the 1994 Tau Delta Kappa Teacher's Excellence Award, and the 1990 Clarkson University Computer Curriculum Award.

Joel Goldschein, a 1957 mechanical engineering graduate, was a supply chain management visionary long before the term "supply chain" was coined and "global" added to the phrase. He was the founder and president of Atlas Door Corporation, an innovative company that supplied rolling steel and other specialty doors to industry.

In memory of Goldschein and to honor his vision, his family, including wife Lynda and daughters Gail, Sharon and Terri, recently established the Joel Goldschein '57 Endowed Chair in Global Supply Chain Management through a generous gift to the Clarkson University School of Business.
