Former Potsdam resident publishes his second book

Dr. Bruce Conroe, former SUNY Potsdam administrator, has published his second nonfiction book, ‘Beyond the Horizon,’ which provides stories about his world travels and tips for first-time travelers.

Conroe, of Saratoga Springs, lived in Potsdam with his family from 1967 until 1986, when he retired from SUNY Potsdam. His four children graduated from Potsdam Central School, as did three of his grandchildren. Conroe and his late wife Barbara were active in the United Methodist Church, and Conroe was president of Potsdam Lions Club. Their daughter, Laurie Mousaw, is a midwife in Potsdam, and one of their grandchildren, Kaylie DeShane, lives in Norwood with her family.

Conroe was a high school math teacher and guidance counselor who worked at SUNY Potsdam first as a counselor, then as an academic administrator, retiring as acting provost in 1986.

The Conroes traveled extensively in Europe, as well as Russia, Thailand and the Canary Islands, and destinations in the U.S. They traveled via airplane, boat, bus and car, often with other people. Bruce Conroe’s recent trips have been to Ireland, Scotland, Germany and the Pacific Northwest.

“This book was written for two reasons,” Conroe said. “One reason was to tell the stories of my many trips outside the United States for people who have never had the opportunity to travel abroad. The other reason is to give those who have traveled abroad the opportunity to relive some of those experiences and remember the people who travelled with them.

“The trips have mostly been voluntary except for the two biggest: one was forced by the Army draft and the other I could not reject when asked to go by my boss (a recruiting trip to South Korea and other Asian nations for SUNY Potsdam in the 1980s).”

Conroe holds a BA and MA from Alfred University and an EdD from University at Albany.

‘Beyond the Horizon’ is available in Kindle and paperback from the publisher, Book Vine Press, and from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
