AIAA Associate Fellows are "individuals of distinction who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics." They have distinguished themselves by their notable contributions and accomplishments to the aerospace community.

"This distinguished group of individuals exemplifies passion and dedication to advancing the aerospace profession," said AIAA President Basil Hassan. "Each of them was selected because of their significant and lasting contributions to the field. They are truly shaping the future of aerospace."

Martinez's research is in the development of a Holistic Structural Integrity Process, known as HolSIP. This process is physics-based and founded upon the primary idea that all failure mechanisms involved in the degradation of the structure are interconnected and should not be analyzed as merely the sum of individual mechanisms. As part of his research, Martinez focuses on advancements in the field of structural health monitoring, load Monitoring, and fatigue of metallic and composite structures.

Martinez has written and co-written extensively in his field, publishing articles, conference papers, book chapters, refereed publications and government publications. He has been a keynote speaker and an invited speaker at professional gatherings abroad and in the United States. He also has taken leadership roles in organizing and chairing conferences and serving on panels.

He is a permanent member of the organizing committee for the International Conference of Adaptive Structure and Technologies (ICAST), in addition to serving as associate editor of the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures.

Martinez received his bachelor of engineering, master of engineering in mechanical engineering, and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Carleton University.

AIAA is the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession. Created in 1963 by the merger of the two great aerospace societies of the day, the American Rocket Society (founded in 1930 as the American Interplanetary Society), and the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences (established in 1933 as the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences), AIAA carries forth a proud tradition of more than 80 years of aerospace leadership.
