POTSDAM -- Clarkson University Associate Mathematics Professor Diana White was recently recognized by Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology (WISEST) as one of five Trailblazing Women in Mathematics as part of the organization’s Science Literacy Week.

WISEST is a STEM outreach program in Canada that is committed to empowering women who are interested or want to seek out opportunities in underrepresented fields, specifically in science, engineering, and technology (STEM). Trailblazing Women in Mathematics, as part of Science Literacy Week 2022, aims to encourage proper recognition and acknowledgment of women in STEM.

“Dr. Diana White, originally from Newfoundland, Canada is an Associate Professor at Clarkson University in Mathematical Biology and a longtime volunteer of WISEST,” reads a profile of White on WISEST’s website. “She sits as a member of WIMB (Women in Mathematical Biology) where she supports women as they advance their careers as Mathematical biologists. In her research, she uses analytical and numerical techniques to help understand biological problems such as cancer treatments, body weight change, liver metabolism, and most recently, biological invasions of aquatic species.”

White has been involved with WISEST for many years as a mentor and feels honored by the recognition.

“I started volunteering for the group as a graduate student at the University of Alberta, and have over the years reconnected with many of the young girls I have mentored who are now professionals in STEM fields!” White said. “To be described as a Trailblazer is pretty special – It’s one of the first times I’ve been honored by my peers with such a title, and I guess it means I’m not only doing good research, but I’m doing work that is important/impactful and is noticed by other young women. That’s pretty special I think.”
