Clarkson University has announced more faculty promotions and appointments.

• Gretchen P. Oliver has been appointed assistant professor of education and assistant director of the university’s Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program. Oliver's research interests focus on the ways in which secondary mathematics and science teachers and English as a new language (ENL) specialists engage English language learners (ELLs) in meaningful learning, while attending to the linguistic demands of these content areas, and how they use culturally responsive teaching practices in the process.

• Beatrice V. Hernout has been appointed assistant professor of biology and the university’s Institute for a Sustainable Environment. Hernout's research interests focus mainly on understanding the effects of chemicals on wildlife species. She is interested in understanding how stressors impact living organisms and ecosystems. Her research integrates techniques from molecular toxicology, spatial analyses, analytical chemistry, ecological monitoring, and computational biology, as well as working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment. The aim of her work is to improve environmental risk assessment for regulatory purposes, helping in mitigating risks, and contributing to the conservation of wildlife species.

• Prashant Hosur Suhas has been appointed assistant professor of political science. His research focuses on the determinants of states' war-making capacity, international conflict processes, interstate rivalries, and Asian security affairs and South Asian security in particular. He is deeply interested in the effect of power disparity between states on different conflict outcomes such as rivalry maintenance, conflict escalation and peaceful versus coercive rivalry terminations.

• Christopher L. LaPoint has been appointed clinical assistant professor of physician assistant studies at the university. A Potsdam area native, he received his bachelor of science degree in physician assistant studies from Rochester Institute of Technology and his bachelor of arts in clinical and child psychology from Alfred University. LaPoint is a licensed physician assistant in New York State. He previously served as an adjunct professor at Clarkson, a physician assistant in family medicine and physician assistant hospitalist at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, and a physician assistant in dermatology/surgery at St. Lawrence Surgery.
