Canton Zonta Club awards scholarships to students from Canton, Potsdam, Gouverneur, Massena, Colton, Edwards

The Zonta Club of Canton is pleased to announce that the following students have been awarded the club’s 2020 Scholarships:

Sophie Ladouceur is the winner of the club’s Putnam-Pitts Scholarship, given in memory of two former Zonta members to a graduating senior with a distinguished academic record. Ms. Ladouceur will attend Syracuse University to study physical therapy. She is a graduate of Canton Central School.

Emma French was awarded the Members’ Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of former Zonta members and given to a senior who demonstrated strong leadership skills and dedication to service in school and in her community throughout her high school career. Ms. French will attend Boston University to study communications. She is a graduate of Potsdam Central School.

Celia Carbone is the winner of the club’s Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award, given to a senior who demonstrated significant community service through projects that enhanced her community and its target audiences. Ms. Carbone will attend the University of Buffalo with a goal of becoming a clinical psychologist. She is a graduate of Gouverneur Central School.

Violet Reyes is the winner of the Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship given for excellence in volunteerism and a strong belief in empowering women worldwide, regionally and locally. Ms. Reyes, from Massena Central School, will attend the University of Tampa to study Biology.

The following students who study at SUNY Canton have been awarded scholarships, funded by the club’s SUNY Canton Endowment Fund, for the 2020-2021 school year. The scholarships are given in memory of Margaret (Peg) Sibley, a former Zonta member. The winners are single parents who have returned to finish college degrees and to demonstrate to their children the importance of earning of college degrees despite facing challenging circumstances in their lives.

Jennifer Houston, Colton, is enrolled in the Health Care Management program.

Koreena Waite, Potsdam, is working on her AAS in Nursing.

Joshua Lashua, Edwards, is studying Funeral Management.

Dusty German-Marino is learning to become an auto technician.

The Zonta Club of Canton congratulates its 2020 winners and urges area young women and men to consider applying in the spring for the 2021 round of awards.
