GOUVERNEUR -- Camryn Chester, daughter of Allen and Amy Chester, Lisbon, was awarded the nineteenth annual Alton LaVack Memorial Scholarship at the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair.

The family of Alton LaVack, who served as dairy cattle superintendent from 1978 to 2003, established the scholarship to be given to any past or present St. Lawrence County 4-H or FFA youth dairy exhibitor.

Ellen Harper presented the $500 college scholarship to Camryn, in memory of her late husband, at the annual fair exhibitor’s meeting.

Camryn is a 2019 graduate of Madrid-Waddington Central School and is entering her first year at SUNY Plattsburgh. She is majoring in early childhood education with plans to pursue a career as an art teacher, in hopes of working with special education students.

Besides being a member of 4-H, FFA, and Junior Holstein Club, Camryn has been actively involved with the Junior Dairy Leader Program through Cornell. For many years, she promoted dairy products as a member of the St. Lawrence County Dairy Princess Program, including spending 2017 – 18 as the county dairy princess.

During high school, Camryn was also involved in soccer and basketball, National Honor Society, Stage Crew, History Club, and Varsity Club.

To raise money for college, she works part time at a local winery, babysits for two young children, and also helps out on her home farm. Since she was a young child, she has shown Holsteins, Ayrshires, and Brown Swiss at the fair.
