The Sri Lankan Student Collective and community in Potsdam staged a protest in front of the Potsdam Post Office on Sunday, May 1, as part of a US-wide protest to support Sri Lanka. The protest was held ‘to support Sri Lankans fighting for the country on everyone's behalf, to gain the attention of necessary international authorities and to advocate for a politically unbiased system change’ in the country. Sri Lanka is currently battling its worst ever economic crisis in its history with soaring inflation, huge piles of debts, bleeding foreign reserves and tanking currency, the group said. Essential goods such as milk, rice, and cereals, as well as medicines, gasoline, and cooking gas are all in short supply. In addition, everyday electricity power outages of 12–13 hours have become the norm. Across the island, the common people have taken to the streets for weeks in protest, demanding solutions to their impossible living situation, said the student collective.
