Most respondents favor county changing weed-cutting practices

Some organic farmers in St. Lawrence County say highway crews have sprayed their land with pesticides and herbicides despite their requests that it not be done. St. Lawrence County Superintendent Donald Chambers says certified organic farms can request in letter not to be sprayed. Spraying is supposed to be limited to guiderails and road signs. Some trimming is done by mechanical means. The requests to not be sprayed is limited to certified organic farms, Chambers said. Would you like to see a change in the way the county handles eliminating weeds and overgrowth around road signs and guiderails? 62.2% said yes, 32.4% said no and 5.4% were unsure.
