Vera LaRoe of Raymondville caught this big guy, which she believed was a snapping turtle, relaxing on a stump in the Grasse River July 31. However, Peggy Pyke-Thompson, Environmental Assessment Officer, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, had this to say, "This is actually a wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) and not a snapping turtle. The orange coloration on the legs and neck are characteristic of a wood turtle, the ridges on the shell are not as pronounced as they are on a snapper. It is listed as a vulnerable species throughout its range in the US and is considered endangered in Ontario and is considered threatened by COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada).
