Newspaper closure prompts protest in Canton
Friday, June 21, 2019 - 1:51 pm

About 20 Canton residents protested the planned closure of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer next week in front of the Johnson Newspapers office, 1 Main St., shortly after noon today. As passing cars honked their horns, Town Historian Linda Casserly, who helped organize the event, and others urged the Johnsons to consider combining the Plaindealer with the Courier-Observer of Massena and Potsdam. Also speaking were John Friot, former Plaindealer editor and WWNY-tv reporter; Tom Jennison, St. Lawrence County Republican Committee chairman; and Pat Alden, from the Canton Church & Community Program. Casserly presented Paul Mitchell, Plaindealer editor, with a copy of a 1962 edition of the paper to recognize his contributions. North Country Now photo by Cheryl Shumway.
