CANTON -- Zumba instructors Stephanie Plaisted, Alisah Todd, Kim French and June Peoples will be “pumping it up” Zumba style for Healthy Heart Month on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Lawrence University’s Newell Field House.
The event is free and open to everyone.
Participants will be treated to two hours of music and Zumba dancing emceed by Ben Todd. They can also take advantage of free blood pressure, cholesterol, and bone density checks, information, prize drawings and more from partnering organizations Canton-Potsdam Hospital, the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative, the American Red Cross of NNY, the Canton and Potsdam Rescue Squads, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Kinney Drugs, and the Tobacco Free Coalition
“Our goal is to get as many people as possible involved in raising awareness about heart disease and how to prevent it,” said June Peoples. “Everyone has a story about a family member or friend whose life has been impacted or cut short by heart attack or stroke. This is an opportunity for all of us to be proactive about our own health and the health of those we care about. We’re asking people of all ages to join the fun, bring friends, wear red, dance and learn their numbers.”
There is never a bad time to start thinking about heart health, say the instructors. There are important steps people of any age can take to improve health and reduce risk factors. Being active, eating well, watching your weight, being tobacco free, seeing a doctor regularly and “knowing your numbers” are all instrumental to good heart health.
“A Zumba event in conjunction with Healthy Heart Month seemed like a perfect fit for the four of us,” said Stephanie Plaisted.
All four instructors are members of the Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN).
