Snowstravaganza
CANTON: Canton Winterfest 2019 Snowstravaganza! at Wachtmeister Field Station, noon-4 p.m., Nature Up North and friends hosting open house with winter activities including: snowshoeing, animal tacking, cross country ski clinic, and an indoor cardboard sled building workshop (cardboard sled races Saturday, Feb. 16); snowshoes provided first come first serve; for the ski clinic, please RSVP to info@natureupnorth.org with your boot size; free and open to families and kids of all ages; hot cocoa provided; children younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult; Wachtmeister Field Station is heated and has a public restroom; natureupnorth.org/events.

Memorial sled run
MASSENA: 1st ever Jeremy P. Kearns Memorial Snowmobile Poker run, 11 a.m.,Cedar View Golf Club, 462 State Highway 37C; proceeds from the benefit will go towards the St Lawrence Cemetery in Louisville; ride will end at the Cedar View in Massena with ceremony and awards starting at 6 p.m.; door prizes, 50/50 raffle, silent auctions, live music, food and drinks.
Family snowshoe days
CANTON: Easy snowshoeing on Indian Creek Nature Center trails, 1125 Co Rt. 14, near Rensselaer Falls, off NYS Hwy 68; 10:00 a.m.; observe tracks and other signs to learn which animals are active; snowshoes available to borrow; dress in layers; bring a drink, snack; call to register: Eileen Wheeler 315-386-2482.
Ice fishing derby
GOUVERNEUR: Gouverneur Fire Department’s 6th Annual Ice Fishing Derby; event is an open boundary derby; pre-registration Feb. 8 4-8 p.m.; registration on Feb. 9 at fire station opens at 4 a.m.; adult entry fee is $20; kids division 13 and under $15; grand prize of $500 (based on a minimum of 100 entrants); giveaways of ice augers, jet sleds and other prizes; raffles and 50/50, unlucky catch prizes and a lucky catch prize; all fish must be entered by 4:30 p.m.; prizes will be drawn at 5 p.m. at the station; all Northern Pike entered must be a minimum of 18 inches; all events will be held at Gouverneur Fire Station.
Ice fishing derby
WADDINGTON: Sons of the American Legion Waddington Post 420 hosting 18th annual ice fishing derby, from sunrise until 4 p.m.; boundaries are from Iroquois Dam to the Coles Creek Marina and all connecting water in between; $25 per person; under 16 free; cash awards to paid registrants with the heaviest northerns will be announced at award ceremony at 5 p.m. at the Waddington American Legion; sign up at American Legion Waddington, Louisville Mini Mart, Uppstrom’ s Bait and Tackle or weigh-in station at the American Legion day of the derby until 9 a.m.; 315-250-5252.
