Hay & pasture school
CANTON: Cornell Cooperative Extension is presenting a Hay & Pasture School, 6:30-9 p.m., Extension Learning Farm, 2043B State Highway 68; topic is forages for grass-fed markets; Betsy Hodge, CCE livestock educator, will give a quick introduction to the types of forages you need; Kitty O’Neil, North Country Regional Ag Team field crops specialist, and Joe Lawrence, dairy Forage systems specialist with Pro-Dairy, will follow with how to make those feeds; Joe Lawrence will even talk about how to prioritize which fields you harvest first and how to adjust that when the weather doesn’t cooperate; baleage production will also be covered as an alternative to dry hay; registration: http://stlawrence.cce.cornell.edu, 315-379-9192 or email Betsy Hodge at bmf9@cornell.edu; $10 charge per person to attend and that can be paid on-line or at the door.
Living writers series
CANTON: SUNY Canton will begin the spring installment of its popular Living Writers Series with author Christopher Kennedy who will read from his fifth collection of poetry, "Clues from the Animal Kingdom," 6:30 p.m., Richard W. Miller Campus Center's Woodcock Conference Suite (Room 213); free and open to the public.
Fry Family presentation

Oil painting class
OGDENSBURG: Oil painting class, Frederic Remington Art Museum series of adult art classes, 1-4 p.m.; with local artist Julie Pratt; foundation skills of painting with oil, with a focus on four main skills: composition, shading, color mixing, and application of paint; participants in the class will paint from life, using a still-life as a guide; Pratt will introduce a series of exercises to create a better understanding of the oil paint medium, and the foundation skills that will help students to progress further in their painting; class is excellent for those who have already worked in oil paint and desire a fuller understanding of the medium or for those who have never used it before; taught at the Eva Caten Remington Education Center, 323 Washington St.; all skill levels welcome, materials provided, though artists are welcome to bring their own materials if they prefer; $15 for members of the Remington Museum and $25 for non-members; limited to 12 participants; 315-393-2425 or email desmond@fredericremington.org to ask questions or sign up, or visit fredericremington.org to register online.
