Antique appraisal day

OGDENSBURG: Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington St., will host an antique appraisal day, noon-4 p.m.; Gerald Petro and staff from Iroquois Auctions will provide a verbal appraisal for $5 per item; proceeds benefit the museum; for $200, Gerald Petro will give a walk-through verbal appraisal in a home, with all proceeds to benefit the museum; when selling high value items, people are asked to call, 315-561-9777 for a consultation; info: 315-393-2425, melanie@fredericremington.org; at 1 p.m. Syracuse attorney Marcy Robinson Dembs will give an informal talk on estate planning and philanthropy, talk is free.

Historic walking tours

GOUVERNEUR/LISBON: In partnership with the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, two local historians will conduct history walking tours – in Gouverneur, and Lisbon; both events are free and open to the public; no advance registration required; come prepared for the weather as tours are outside; Gouverneur,1 p.m., historian Joe Laurenza will lead a tour starting at the Gouverneur Museum, 30 Church St., that will center around the Village Park, its history and the historical buildings that surround it, chicken barbecue by the Masons precedes this event at noon, 315-323-2654; Lisbon, 6 p.m., historian Nancy Lafaver will lead an outside walking tour, beginning at the Lisbon Railroad Depot Museum, 6936 County Route 10, 315-393-4154, nlafaver@hotmail.com.

Car, vendor show

MASSENA: Massena Fire Department hosting third annual open house and car and vendor show, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Massena International Airport, 90 Aviation Rd., admission is free, donations accepted; antique tractor display, live music with Ten Cent Green from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., demonstration by U.S. Border Patrol K9 Rocky at 1 p.m., and retrieving demonstrations by Tony Zappia and Ice at 11:30 a.m.; bounce houses set up by B.D. Substance use program

WADDINGTON: A program about addiction and drug abuse, “Shredding the Stigma Surrounding Substance Use,” 4-8 p.m., Whittaker Park and Civic Center; will feature former pro BMX racer Tony Hoffman, who will share his story and path to recovery; several local families will also share their experiences with substance use and there will be a dedication balloon launch; bring a blanket and a lawn chair; smoke free event and will have designated smoking areas.

Back to school fair

POTSDAM: Potsdam Snack Pack Program will host the first "Back to School Fair,” 11 a.m.-3 p.m., New Hope Community Church, 33 Grant St.; co-sponsored by the Potsdam Central School District and Chamber of Commerce; students can receive free school supplies, hygiene items, haircuts, vision screening, and other necessities; carnival games, bounce house, obstacle course, face painting, free food, entertainment; opportunity to meet with a food service representative and get help filling out the forms for free or reduced lunch; buses will stop at four locations throughout the day to pick up families and transport them to the venue, loop will start from Debra Drive at 11 a.m., and continue on to Meadow East, Evergreen Park, and Swan Landing; info@potsdamsnackpack.org.

Gem & Mineral Show

CANTON: St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club hosting 53rd annual Gem & Mineral Show & Swap, Canton Pavilion, 90 Lincoln St. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25; $2 admission, children 12 and under free; featuring handcrafted jewelry made with precious and semi-precious stones for the jewelry lover, gemstone beads, jewelry making supplies, free lessons for the crafter, museum quality crystals, fossils, mineral identification table, mineral specimens for the nature lover and art collector, handcrafted gift items, free wire-wrapping lessons, free mineral kits for the kids, mineral collecting trips to some of St. Lawrence County's famous rock-hunting sites for the serious and novice rockhound alike; Brazilian amethyst cathedral raffle, $1 or six for $5; hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, chips, fries for sale; auction at 5 p.m. Saturday.
