Virtual boating safety course to be offered in Lisbon

LISBON — A virtual boating safety course will be held April 26-29 from 4-6 p.m. each night. The course is being offered by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and sponsored by Lisbon Central School After School Program but is available to everyone.

Cathy Trenton, Commander of the Ogdensburg Flotilla says, “this is a great opportunity to get your boating safety certificate without having to drive a great distance to attend classes. No matter where you live, anyone with a computer or cell phone with a camera and microphone can complete this online course by attending just four, two-hour online sessions”.

New York State requires that all power boat operators, who must be 10 years or older, and personal watercraft (jet ski) operators, who must be 14 years or older, complete a one time, eight-hour boating safety course. The “Boat America” course complies with this regulation. Power boat operators born after 1/1/1988 must complete a course before 2022; born after 1/1/1983 before 2023; born after 1/1/1978 before 2024. All powerboat operators, regardless of age, must complete the course before 2025.

The cost is $35 per person. Lisbon students qualify for a tuition-free scholarship. There are family rates available.

Sign-ups will be accepted until April 14. Space is limited to 30 students and 15 adults. To register, or for more information, contact Julie Rexford @ 315-393-4951 or rexfordj@lisbon.k12.ny.us. Include name, birthdate, address, email, and phone number in correspondence.
