Town of Colton Winterfest to take place Jan. 23-26

COLTON -- The theme for the 2020 Town of Colton Winterfest from Jan. 23-26 will be “100 Years of Progress – Equal Rights for All.”

The event will commemorate the town celebration’s history from 1920-2020.

The annual festival benefits the Neighborhood Center serving Colton, Pierrepont and Parishville.

The following preliminary schedule of Winterfest activities as of Dec. 15 has been posted on the town website:

Throughout the festival

Fundraising for Neighborhood Center including a silent auction of fine and folk art including Dick Bailey print, Judy Filarecki paintings, Stephen Hewer pyrography, locally painted barn quilts, and more.

Art Around Town installations including the unveiling of Winterfest barn quilt mural, baby barn quilts, and more.

Remembrance Trees -- 42 trees displayed in the hamlets of South Colton and Colton.

Open skating in the pavilion at Swift Field (weather dependent) at times to be announced.

Thursday, Jan. 23

4-7 p.m. All-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner with music by Andy Van Duyne at CPCS cafeteria, 4921 State Highway 56; $10, $8 for children 6-10 and seniors, free for children 5 and younger, $32 for a family of four, $35 for a family of 5, $8 for each additional family member, take-outs available; unveiling of Winterfest barn quilt mural featuring 1920-2020 design;

5 p.m. Presentation of Citizen of the Year Award to Lorraine Gowing during the spaghetti dinner.

Friday, Jan. 24

5:30-8:45 p.m. Colton Girls vs. Morristown at CPCS, JV game starts at 5:30 p.m., varsity game starts at 7:15 p.m.;

7-8:30 p.m. Trivia Night at Higley Flow State Park Trails Lodge; suggested donation of $5 per person, refreshments served; space limited, teams of 4 must register no later than Jan. 10 by e-mailing Cheryl Thomas at rthomas28@twcny.rr.com;

Saturday, Jan. 25

7-11 a.m. Pancake breakfast at Masonic Lodge, details TBC;

8 a.m.-4 p.m. NYS Snowmobile Safety Course at CPCS, no fee, sponsored by Sno-Skippers and St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Association, registration from 7:30-8 a.m., adults and youth welcome, free lunch provided, Colton-Pierrepont Central School Room 216, 4921 State Highway 56;

9 a.m. 10-mile foot race on roads around Colton; goes until the last person finishes; starts and ends at CPCS, race day registration begins at 7 a.m. in Colton-Pierrepont Central School Cafeteria; route is along well-marked and marshaled roads; trophies 5 deep in 8 age groups along with other prizes and maple syrup awards; for pre-registration or questions: Dan or Renee Dominie 315-379-9290;

9 a.m.-12 p.m. Rod Thomas Memorial Higley Hustle Ski Races at Higley Flow State Park, weather dependent; all ages and abilities, first timers welcome, two classical events, awards for first three places in both events by age and gender; 5 & 10K Classic Technique Race, all ages and abilities at 10 a.m., registration at 9 a.m., $10 race entry fee; Youth Race, variable length by age 2.5K maximum race for youth younger than 14 years of age, noon; $5 race entry fee; Higley Flow State Park, 442 Cold Brook Drive (outside hamlet of South Colton);

9 a.m.-3 p.m. White elephant sale plus lunchtime food at Colton Methodist Church, 11 Church St.; includes $1 bag sale from 12-3 p.m.; before sale donations can be left with any church member or brought to the church on Friday from 9 a.m.-noon; lunchtime food includes baked goods and soup;

9 a.m-4 p.m. First day of Annual Quilt Show at three venues: Colton Hepburn Library at 84 Main St. featuring Art Quilts by Fiberistas, St. Patrick’s Church Parish Center at 4897 State Highway 56 featuring the Towns of St. Lawrence County Barn Quilt Mural plus painted barn quilts for sale inspired by the mural on display [Also site for Colton apparel and other products plus Silent Auction of Fine & Folk Art supporting Neighborhood Center], and Catamount Lodge at 2092 State Highway 56 featuring creations by The Quilting Friends;

9 a.m.-6 p.m. First day of free clothing giveaway at CPCS Auditorium Lobby, free to all to reduce, reuse, and recycle; clothing for infants, boys, girls, men and women of all sizes including shoes, boots, and winter items;

Time to be announced, skiing and snowshoeing at Catamount Mountain with ADK Laurentian Chapter, no fee, registration required in advance by contacting event organizer; 3-4 miles round trip; 330 feet of elevation gain; level 2, slow pace, 1st mile gradual climb, last ½ mile quite steep; option to visit Catamount Lodge afterwards for refreshments and quilt show;

10 a.m.-11 a.m. Story hour at library, no fee, story, craft, and snack, Colton Hepburn Library, 84 Main St.

10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Chilifest at CPCS gym lobby, $4 for bowl of homemade chili with roll, $2 for chili dog, $1 for drinks;

1-4 p.m. Wine & spirits tastings at Higley Hooch, 3924 State Highway 56, no fee, discounts on featured products

Time to be confirmed, tap takeover by Genesee Brewing and live music at 8:30 p.m. by Divided Roads at Raquette River Pub

7 p.m. Basketball game CPCS staff vs. NYS Troopers, $5 admission, $1 off if donating a can or box of food to benefit Neighorhood Center food pantry; free for children younger than 5 years of age; CPCS Gymnasium, 4921 State Highway 56;

Sunday, Jan. 26

8 a.m.-noon, 8th Annual International Breakfast at CPCS cafeteria, 4921 State Highway 56; breakfast bakes, waffles made to order, muffins, sausage, eggs, and more; $8 adults, $6 seniors and children ages 6-13 years old, free for children 5 years and younger;

8 a.m.-1 p.m. Second day of free clothing giveaway at CPCS auditorium lobby;

10 a.m.-2 p.m. Family Day at Higley Flow State Park, 442 Cold Brook Drive, introduction to ski-joring (with dog), orienteering (map) challenge, gear swap, and potluck lunch;

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Second day of Annual Quilt Show at three venues; details listed above;

11 a.m. Frying pan toss at Colton-Pierrepont Amvets Post 262, 5082 State Highway 56, $5 to compete plus food for sale after competition; three categories of competition; goes until all registrants have competed;

12-1 p.m. Foul shooting contest for grades K-12 in CPCS gymnasium; registration from 12-12:15 p.m.; competition starts at 12:15 p.m.; no fee; 5 age groups, grades K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-12; awards to female and male winner in each age group

1 p.m. Lena the Lizard Lady in CPCS auditorium, no fee, snakes, chameleons, and other reptiles;

2-6 p.m. Cardboard sled races and sledding party at Racquette Valley Fish & Game Club, no fee; bring pre-built sled made of cardboard, tape, and paint to race; 4 age groups 5-9, 10-12, 13-18, and adult; judging starts at 2:30 p.m.; racing starts at 3 p.m.; prizes awarded; open sledding with bonfire and hot chocolate after race.
