POTSDAM – A three-part gardening series to help vegetable gardeners, both beginners and experienced, will be offered at the Potsdam Public Library. The classes are designed to minimize cost and effort, and maximize yield and satisfaction.
The free classes will be presented by Paul Hetzler, Horticulture and Natural Resources Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County.
The first of three successive Thursday classes from 12-1:30 p.m. is March 14. It is titled: Victory in the Garden Part 1: Soil Health and Site Requirements. Get the dirt on soil testing, plant nutrient requirements, and site selection. Also, learn about plant families and their importance for planning your garden.
The second class, March 21, is Victory in the Garden Part 2: Plant Diseases: Disease-Free Garden is Nothing to Sneeze at. Changing weather patterns and new disease strains can be challenging obstacles. Learn new strategies to combat these issues.
The third class, March 28, is Victory in the Garden Part 3: Pests New and Old. Look for Trouble; Reap the Benefits.
Over the past decade, several new and significant garden pests have arrived in the region. Learn how to identify and manage the new pests and the old ones, too.
