CANTON -- The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton, 3½ E. Main St., will welcome SUNY Potsdam professor M.J. Heisey as a pulpit guest for the service on Sunday, February 17, at 10:30 a.m.

The sermon’s title will be “The Persistent Gift of Ordinary Hands.”

Heisey, a history professor at SUNY Potsdam, has worked with two communities drawn together by arpilleras, patchwork tapestries made by Chilean women in the 1970s and 1980s to challenge the Pinochet dictatorship.

She is part of a North Country team currently organizing exhibits and cultural programming around these arpilleras.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Heisey worked for Jubilee Crafts, a pioneering fair-trade organization that imported and sold arpilleras.

She will speak about how the power and beauty of the tapestries have drawn her into community efforts and how they continue to be at work in the world today.
