POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller will give the first talk of the semester for the college’s Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in Satterlee 310.

The talk, “Teaching the Conquest of Mexico,” will focus on Schwaller’s teaching experiences in his field of expertise..

The traditional view holds that Hernando Cortes and a small band of intrepid Spaniards defeated the mighty Aztec empire with pluck, bravery and superior arms. Cortes himself has taken on almost mythic grandeur as a military tactician and leader of men. The presenter will dispel these myths while using the lesson as an example of effective history education.

The seminar session is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

“The conquest of Mexico is a critical event in our understanding of the history of our hemisphere, but most of what people imagine they know about the event is in fact colored by historiography of previous eras,” Schwaller said. “This discussion will look into what we think we know about the conquest, and what a better and more accurate view of the conquest is in light of modern research and historiographical thinking.”

The seminar series is sponsored by The School of Education and Professional Studies at SUNY Potsdam. Over the last four years, the series has hosted more than 40 presenters.

“The seminar’s goal is two-fold: to serve as support system for faculty members in The School of Education and Professional Studies in advancing their professional development, and to foster campus-wide and inter-university collaboration in the field of education, by inviting distinguished guest speakers,” said organizer Dr. Sergei Abramovich, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Schwaller recent book, “The History of the Catholic Church in Latin America: From Conquest to Revolution and Beyond,” published by New York University Press, traces the history and development of the Roman Catholic Church throughout Latin America, from the days of conquest up to the present.
