Spring opening for Norwood Fountain Park slated for April 27

NORWOOD -- Fountain Park will have its spring opening on Saturday, April 27, at noon, and all are invited to attend.

The restoration of the over 100-year-old cobblestone fountain started in May 2016 by Save The Fountain committee members, with the intent of restoring the fountain to a running condition that generations of Norwood families and surrounding community members fondly remember, said a press release.

Through the generosity of many current and former Norwood residents, Fort Drum soldiers, SUNY Canton engineering students and Clarkson University, and Norwood BOCES instructors and 2018 graduating classes, Fountain Park was established in June 2018, the press release said.

Fountain Park has a Welcome Center, two historic kiosks, a memorial brick walkway, several memorial benches, honorary stones and newly planted shrubbery, along with a new flag pole and light. The fountain and the light are all powered by solar energy.

Fountain Park was also featured in The St. Lawrence County Historical Society’s Quarterly in December 2018, noting its history and restoration. Along with their member’s assistance, a directional sign is also being worked on.

Matthew Braise and members from the SUNY Canton ECO (Environmental Change Organization) Club will team up with SUNY Canton instructor, Kevin McAdoo, former SUNY Canton Solar Ready Vets Coordinator, to get the fountain running. They were instrumental in opening Fountain Park last year and shutting it down at the end of the season, and will continue to do so each year, said the press release.

Members of the Norwood American Legion will be at the opening to raise the flag for the season.

Fountain Park will be prepared for its opening, and maintained throughout the season, by the village of Norwood.
