CANTON -- Captains of the St. Lawrence University field hockey team have organized a virtual 5K for Sunday, April 26 to raise money for the University's Emergency Student Assistance Fund.

"Being a student at St. Lawrence University and a part of the field hockey team has introduced me to so many great people; the community that we are all a part of at SLU is truly unmatched," said Anna Parker. "As I arrived home from campus and prepared to transition to online classes, I couldn't stop thinking about my friends and fellow Laurentians who were struggling due the sudden departure from campus and all the other obstacles that stemmed from the COVID-19 crisis. When I saw the Emergency Student Assistance Fund, I immediately reached out to Hagi Bradley (Vice President and Dean of Student Life) to see what we could possibly do to help. My team had already been discussing doing a fundraiser to give back to our local communities, but we realized that St. Lawrence is our home, and we wanted to do everything we could to help the students. I proposed a virtual 5K, and my teammates and I immediately started brainstorming how we could raise the most money possible. We wanted to raise enough money to make an impact and help out as many students as we could."

Interested participants can send the $10 registration fee, or any other donation amount, via Venmo to @Alexandra-Calder.

They are then encouraged to send pictures and/or videos of themselves participating to the field hockey team on Instagram (@slufh) for a compilation of everyone "running" together.

"We started raising money less than a week ago and the outpouring of contributions that we have received thus far has exceeded our expectations," Parker added. "We are running the 5K on April 26th and we're encouraging people to donate to the cause and/or join in by running, walking, or biking with us."

After the event, assistant coach Alex Calder will make a one-time donation to the fund with the total amount raised.
