Potsdam Recreation Department cancels summer youth programming

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Summer Rec Program has been canceled for this summer.

“When looking at the circumstances and the potential safety issues associated with some of these factors, as Recreation Director I have to unfortunately cancel the Potsdam Summer Rec Program for 2020,” Trey Smutz, Village of Potsdam recreation director, said on the Potsdam Recreation Facebook page.

Over the six-week program, children ranging in ages from four to sixteen participate in activities of their choosing under the supervision of recreation staff.

Sports equipment, toys, and items such as arts and crafts were often shared by youngsters. In addition, many campers were riding the bus to and from the arena alongside their peers and also linking up with a partner in conjunction with our buddy system when around the water.

“For years, our program has been a great combination of swim lessons at Postwood and sports and activities at the arena,” said Smutz.

He said if they can offer smaller-scale programming, such as a week of soccer or water safety, they may do that.

“We will look to start our kayak and paddle boards rentals in a couple weeks, although reservations will have to be made through the recreation office and at least 24 hours in advance,” Smutz said. “Until that time, I strongly urge individuals to take precautions in protecting the health and safety of our community as we at Potsdam Rec continue to implement measures at our facilities so that we can be safer and better than ever.”

Job descriptions and applications for lifeguards, beach attendants, and maintenance personnel are now available. Anyone interested in applying or with general questions can contact Smutz at 315-265-4030 or tsmutz@vi.potsdam.ny.us.
