Potsdam Library Computer Center offering computer, internet, crochet and business courses in November

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Library's Public Computing Center is offering a wide variety of computer, internet, crocheting, and business courses in November.

Classes and webinars will focus on extending the growing season using high tunnels and hoop houses, basic computer, Google Earth and Google Maps, introduction to Excel, managing and editing photos, creating a website, introduction to Power Point, introduction to Facebook, crocheting, updating your resume, marketing your small business on the internet and women in the workplace-wage negotiations.

Reservations are required by calling 265-7230 and asking for René or Bob.

The courses and webinar schedule follows:

• Wednesday, Nov. 2, Webinar: Extending the Growing Season Using High Tunnels and Hoop Houses with Ron Cordsiemon, Missouri Plant Materials Center Manager for USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service in Elsberry, Missouri. High tunnels and hoop houses can be used to increase the growing season of a variety of plants. This session will cover the different types of structures used and the time and expense involved for construction. This session also will look at the potential for increased production among different types of vegetables. NEW!

• Monday Nov. 7, Basic Computer: 9.30-11.30. This class helps you to use files and folders to organize your electronic documents so that you can find them when you need them! Also learn what “data” is and why and how it should be saved independently of your hard drive.

• Wednesday, Nov. 9, Google Earth & Google Maps. 10-Noon. Using Google Maps and Google Earth both separately and together will unlock a whole new world of easy travel planning and navigation as well as discovering and exploring places around the globe. Learn how to use these free tools from Google to supplement your travel experience or thirst for knowledge.

• Wednesday, Nov. 9: Learn to Crochet with Sue Hagerty. Noon-1. This class combines hands-on learning with instruction on how to find great patterns online. If you are homebound and would like to Skype with the P.C.C. to attend the meeting, let the P.C.C. know and we’ll give you a call. NEW!

• Wednesday, Nov. 9, Microsoft Excel 2010: 1-3. Come and learn the basics with the latest version of Excel. Differences between the new version and the older versions (2003, 2007) will be highlighted.

• Thursday, Nov. 10: Introduction to Microsoft Word. 9.30-11.30. This class teaches the fundamentals of page alignment, selecting font size, style and color and using many other options Word makes available. During this class students will write a letter and make a table using the techniques they learn.

• Thursday, Nov. 10: Managing and Editing Your Photos. 10-Noon Want to know the basics of managing the pictures or photos on your computer, or even getting them

on there in the first place? This class will take you through the steps of editing photos, saving them in folders where you can organize them, and sending them via email.

• Thursday, Nov. 10: Creating a Website (One on one). 1-3. Want to get started on a website that you can manage yourself? You may be surprised just how little money it takes to create a ".com" that you can learn to edit yourself. Whether it's personal or for your small business, this is your chance to walk in and sit down with someone who will get you started in the creation of your website.

• Monday, Nov. 14: Introduction to Microsoft Excel. 9.30-11.30. Let us introduce you to one of the premiere accounting programs! The class deals with such issues as cell selection, formatting, and copying. You will learn how to use simple formulae to perform basic mathematical calculations.

• Monday, Nov. 14: Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint. 10-Noon Do you know how to create flashy presentations that convey your knowledge of a certain subject? PowerPoint presentations can be made into photo albums, complete with music or narrations, or to distribute on CDs or DVDs. If you are in the sales field, just a few simple clicks can add an illustrative chart of data or an organizational chart of your company’s structure. This course will give you the tools needed to create a longer presentation in the future. Wednesday 16th Introduction to Facebook. 10-Noon. Are there people in your past that you want to reconnect with? Social networking sites may help you find those people of the past or introduce you to other people with similar interests. This class will focus primarily on Facebook; one of the more popular social networking sites where users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. NEW!

• Wednesday, Nov. 16: The New Workplace: Women in the Workplace and Wage Negotiations. Noon-1. Negotiating earnings can be tough and women frequently advocate for others but not themselves. Come learn from a certified wage negotiator how to recognize and prepare for a wage negotiation opportunity. NEW!

• Thursday, Nov. 17: Entrepreneur Series: Marketing Your Small Business through the Internet.10-Noon. Have a small business, but no website? Want to set up a Paypal account, but don't know how? Then this class is for you! This entrepreneur workshop will focus on how individuals can effectively promote their small businesses by using the internet. You'll learn about the resources available to create your own website, how to use eBay and Paypal, and other tips on how to promote your small business. From 1-3 There will be a chance for attendees to work one on one with the instructor to address their own concerns in this area.

• Monday, Nov. 21: Introduction to Facebook. 10-Noon. Are there people in your past that you want to reconnect with?
