Parades, fireworks, events planned in Norwood, Massena, Morristown, Hannawa, Gouverneur to celebrate independence

United States independence will be celebrated throughout the nation this week and the North Country is no exception.

Norwood will again host its annual field day including performances by the Norwood Brass Firemen, Cubby T. Clown and Six Foot Midget along with fireworks and a large parade. St. Lawrence Centre in Massena plans live music, face painting and fireworks on July 3. And Hannawa Falls, Gouverneur and Morristown area also planning fireworks to celebrate the holiday.

A list of some of the area’s July 4 celebrations follows:

Norwood

The 77th Annual Norwood Fire Department Field Day Events starts July 3 on the Village Green. The Norwood Brass Firemen will offer a concert in the park from 7 to 9 p.m. Games of chance, food and legal beverages will be offered at the fire hall. The concert is free and open to the public to enjoy. A pass of the hat will benefit the Norwood Volunteer Fire department.

Cubby T. Clown and Co. will entertain children with face painters and balloon animal sculptors from 7 to 9 p.m.

From 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Six Foot Midget will play the traditional Block Dance in front of the fire hall. A $2 admission will be charged at the gate.

On July 4 a huge parade is scheduled to step off at 1 p.m.

The parade will line up at noon on Maple Street and will progress down Spring Street. The march will end at the Firemen’s Field. The 60- to 70-unit parade will consist of three marching bands, 17 fire departments, three rescue squads, more than 25 floats, antique cars, ATV’s, motorcycles and trucks. Youth and church groups along with many civic and area businesses have contributed to the event.

Last year’s parade was viewed by over 5,000 people.

The parade is themed “Magic Kingdom.” There will be 61 U.S. flags displayed along the parade route.

When a donation of any size is placed into the fireman’s boot, the viewer will be given a flag to wave during the parade.

Cubby T. Clown will also offer face painting and animal balloon sculpturing before and during the parade at the Village Green. Hometown Café has donated all of the plaques for parade awards.

Following the parade, festivities at the Morgan St. Firemen’s Field start with a demolition derby and garden tractor races at 2 p.m. These tractors reach speeds up to 50 miles per hour on an oval track specially built by Haggett Excavation.

Two free live shows by Cubby T. Clown will be take place at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. These will be two different live shows. There will also be a children’s playhouse.

Field days end with one of the biggest firework displays in St. Lawrence County. The fireworks display costs the Norwood Fire Dept. over $5,000. Donations for these fireworks can be made to Norwood Vol. Fire Department, PO Box 231, Norwood, 13668. Perry’s Big M has donated $1,000 toward the fireworks.

Massena

Massena’s St. Lawrence Centre will celebrate Independence Day July 3 from 4 to 9 p.m. with a bounce house available for children. From 4 to 9 p.m. Cubby T. Clown will offer face painting and balloon animal making for Kids Club members.

Massena fire and rescue squads will host demonstrations from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Into the Black, City by Nightfall, and 14 Knuckles Later will perform outdoors from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

At 10:15 p.m. the event will close with the annual fireworks display by Majestic Fireworks.

On Saturday July 7 the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce will host its 15th annual block-dance and classic car, truck and motorcycle exhibit.

The events will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Music will be provided and concessions will be available. Cubby T. Clown will entertain children and with free balloon animals. A bounce house will also be available.

Massena Volunteer Fire Department will host a chicken barbecue at the fire hall.

Hannawa Falls

Robert Plumb Memorial Fireworks will be held at dusk, Saturday July 7 at Postwood Park. Viewing spots are available along Route 56.

Morristown

Morristown Volunteer Fire Department will host its biggest event of the year July 3 and 4 as the volunteers host a variety of events in celebration of Independence Day.

Events begin Saturday June 30 with a fundraiser auction to help department pay for the field day events.

July 3, a fireworks display will be held at dusk.

Wednesday July 4, will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. on Morristown's Main Street. Marching bands from various area schools will compete.

Following the parade events will be held throughout the day. Concessions will be served as patrons enjoy a variety of fair games and a tractor pull.

A chicken barbecue will also be held.

Gouverneur

Saturday, July 6, the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department will host a fireworks display at the fair grounds. Local band Dragnfly will perform prior to the display at dusk.
