CANTON -- For 150 years, the Canton Fire Department has been serving the citizens of the community.
And Saturday, department members are planning to celebrate the milestone in a big way. The public is invited to enjoy a parade, open house and fireworks.
The first fire company in the village dates back to 1849, when the apparatus consisted of a small rotary engine, according to “History of the Village of Canton” edited by Gates Curtis. Today, the department sports a number of fire engines, a tower truck and tanker along with rescue vehicles.
Numerous fire apparatus and emergency vehicles from Canton and surrounding departments will be featured in the parade, which begins at noon. The parade will travel from the Social Services parking lot to Court Street, Main Street and Riverside Drive, ending at the fire station.
Following the parade, an open house is planned at the fire station until 4 p.m. with historical displays, kids’ games, bounce houses and more. Hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream will be provided.
Fireworks will cap off the day at Canton High School, 99 State St.
