Politics lecture
CANTON: St. Lawrence University will host Lisa Guenther who will deliver this year’s Kathryn Fraser Mackay Memorial Lecture, 4:30-6 p.m., Carnegie Hall, room 10; free and open to the public; Queen’s National Scholar in Political Philosophy and Critical Prison Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Guenther is the author of Solitary Confinement: Social Death and its Afterlives and co-editor of Death and Other Penalties: Philosophy in a Time of Mass Incarceration. From 2012 to 2017, she facilitated a discussion group with men on death row in Tennessee called REACH Coalition. She is currently researching the relationship between slavery, settler colonialism, and incarceration in Canada and the United States.

Smartphone, tablet class
CANTON: Cyber Seniors class on smartphones and tablets, 2:30-4 p.m., St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, 40 W. Main St.; offered by county Office for the Aging, taught by St. Lawrence University students; classes are free to those 60 and older with little or no knowledge, as well as those who want to gain more knowledge of tablets, smartphones and computers; classes are offered in I & II part sessions, so registration will be for 2 classes to be sure topics are covered fully; must bring your own tablet or smartphone.
Author and essayist
CANTON: St. Lawrence University’s annual Writers Series continues its 2018-19 season with author and essayist Brenda Miller, 8 p.m., in Sykes Common Room; free and open to the public; Miller is the author of five essay collections: “Season of the Body,” “Blessing of the Animals,” “Listening Against the Stone,” “Who You Will Become,” and “An Earlier Life.”
