POTSDAM -- The St. Lawrence County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit featuring the watercolor, oil and pen & ink works of Vern Mauk on Saturday, August 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. at their gallery, 51 Market St.

Educated at Indiana State Teacher's College and with a Master's degree from Penn State U., Mr. Mauk arrived with his family in the North Country in 1964 to become the new art instructor at Massena CHS.

At the opening reception, Mauk will discuss the development of his work over years

since moving to Upstate NY. Mauk states, "I was impressed with the images presented by the variety of the area, and it soon became my goal to present art reflecting my feelings of the North Country."

Mauk became close friends with Bob Plumb, another highly accomplished local art instructor. Mauk gives full credit to Bob for his development as a painter of watercolors. "Artists who influence other artists is a major part of the history of art. Bob was the major artist who influenced me" states Mauk.

In turn, Mauk has influenced another generation of artists throughout his career as an artist and teacher.

Vern and his wife, Elizabeth now divide their time between their home in Massena and Texas. He has recently published a book titled “Ink Drawing Fun! An Introduction to Drawing with Ink,” which is also available at the SLC Arts Council.

The exhibit will be on display through September 25th. Call the SLC Arts Council at 265-6860 or visit www.slcartscouncil.org for more information.
