MADRID -- During the Civil War, many types of carriages and wagons were needed to transport soldiers, army supplies, and artillery pieces. And most of the wheels on these vehicles were not interchangeable, making field repairs rather challenging.

Learn more about Civil War era rolling stock when Marty Snye speaks at the next North Country Civil War Round Table on Sunday, May 19, 2 p.m. at the Carriage Barn of the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum, 1755 State Route 345, Madrid.

The Round Table program on May 19 is free and open to the public.

Marty Snye will discuss how much rolling stock was needed for each battalion of artillery and how many wheels were on the ground during the war.

He will also explain the roles of the various tradesmen associated with the production and repair of rolling stock including blacksmiths, carriage makers, and wheelwrights.

Snye is a retired educator who has been blacksmithing for more than 30 years. He has experience repairing wheels and restoring historic vehicles, as well as an interest in history and the connections between blacksmiths and other tradesmen.

The St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum has an extensive collection of horse-drawn vehicles in its timber frame Carriage Barn; the museum is open to the public during the summer, on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
