New youth activities at Hammond Scottish Festival Saturday

HAMMOND – The Hammond Historical Museum plans several new youth activities at the Hammond Scottish Festival this summer.

Early on Saturday morning, Aug. 10, a "Wee Lads and Lassies Fun Run" will take place at the Hammond Central School.

The fun run will be in the form of a Scottish-themed obstacle course for children.

Soon after, young adults are invited to participate in the 5K Kilt Run/Walk. Kilts are encouraged but not mandatory.

The main festival events will follow the runs at the Hammond Historical Museum.

This year the entry button and Kilt Run T-Shirt design was created by eighth grader, Sadey Sprabary.

"I wanted to draw a person. I love to draw people and animals," Sprabary said.

"The contest was originally open to high schoolers, but I knew that Sadey's skills could make her a winner," said Vicki L'Abbe, Sprabary's art teacher.

The museum and school are joining forces to sponsor a guest, Daven Brigham of the Tug Hill Heavies. Brigham, who is currently ranked #4 in the state for the Open Men's class, will share his knowledge of upstate NY's Scottish events and promoting the Heavy Athletics of the Tug Hill Region in high school physical education classes.

“Our mission is to keep our heritage alive by competing and teaching the heavy events," Brigham said. "With technology advancing and life becoming more sedentary in general, it's crucial to get kids involved in physical activity any way we can, and being fun is a huge bonus."

Other activities will be available to youth of all ages.
