CANTON -- Literacy teacher, author and the founder of Literacy Volunteers of America, Ruth Colvin, will speak at St. Lawrence University at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 in Griffiths Arts Center 123.

The event is open to the public, free of charge.

Literacy Volunteers of America merged with Laubach Literacy International to become ProLiteracy, a national volunteer educational organization with nearly 1,000 affiliates across the country. The organization provides both English as a second language (ESL) and basic literacy education.

Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House in 2006, Colvin has also been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and received President Reagan’s Volunteer Action Award. She has been awarded a number of honorary degrees and is the author of five books on literacy and ESL, one on travel and five on native-language literacy, as well as a variety of articles for magazines. Colvin has worked in 26 developing countries in training and consulting.

Colvin lives in Syracuse. Her most recent book, “Off The Beaten Path,” has just been published by Syracuse University Press.

In addition to her public lecture, Colvin will be a guest in the St. Lawrence First-Year Seminar “Make A Difference and Teach Abroad,” taught by Robin Rhodes Crowell.
