Industrial hemp, CBD info sessions coming up in Potsdam, elsewhere in NY state
CANTON -- Over a dozen different events related to growing and using industrial hemp are occurring all over the North Country, including in Potsdam on July 25 and in Canton in early 2020, said a press release from the Local Living Venture.
Anyone interested in learning about the many uses of hemp products, including CBD (cannabidiol) and various other foods and supplements, will have various opportunities to learn more.Farmers may be interested to speak with current licensed growers at a series of field days and growers, processors and retailers may find much of interest at upstate conferences as well.
"CannaBusiness: Capitalizing on the Cannabis Economy" is happening in Rochester on May 16; the "Eastern NY Hemp Conference & Expo" is in Albany on June 3-4; and another conference will likely be held in Canton in early 2020.
For the general public, "CBD and You: The North Country Consumer" is a free educational presentation that will be repeated in two locations -- first in Sackets Harbor on June 6, and again in Potsdam on July 25.
Several field days include: the Aurora Farm Field Crops Field Day, July 11; the Freeville Organic Farm Field Day, July 31; the Cornell Hemp Field Day in Geneva, Aug. 13; the Cornell CBD Hemp Field Day in Ithaca, Sept. 10; and a field day in Ellisburg, and possibly other locations on the northwestern side of New York, on Nov. 16, as the hemp harvest wraps up.
Additionally, hemp will be featured at the Plant Science Day at the Long Island Horticulture Research & Extension Center on July 31 and there will be a specific Hemp Workshop at the Empire Farm Days in Seneca Falls on Aug. 6-8.
Industrial grade hemp is a non-psychoactive version of the marijuana plant; it does not contain significant levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the intoxicant in marijuana, said the press release.
The plant can be grown to produce food, biodegradable plastics, paint, hemp-crete, insulation, bio-fuel, textiles and fiber, and animal feed, but it is important to note that Industrial Hemp produces a non-euphoric compound called cannabidiol (CBD) for medicinal purposes and foodstuffs, the press release said.
