POTSDAM – Dr. Ryan F. Schmit, 1993 Gouverneur High School graduate and 1997, 1999 and 2003 Clarkson University graduate, has recently published his first book, “The Beautiful Dismal Woods: Short Stories from the Adirondacks” published by Clay Bridges Publishing and Communications of Troy, Ohio.

Schmit will be having a book signing Tuesday, Oct. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the University Bookstore, at 39 Market St., Potsdam.

The Beautiful Dismal Woods is a modern campfire classic filled with challenging terrain, unpredictable weather, and tales of human nature.

Experience the joys and challenges of the Adirondack region through this short story collection. A great book for relaxation during a solitary hike or to share with friends as you hang around the campfire.

You'll enjoy the suspense, humor, and occasional ghost story surprises. These stories filled with modern twists will appeal to a wide audience of men and women, teens and adults. Their whimsy and variety will make this a classic to keep in your camper for years to come.

Schmit transports us to the beautiful Adirondack Mountain region, but at the same time he allows room for his stories to translate to any outdoor adventure area. Not hiking the mountains right now? This book will make you want to strap on a pack and go.

Schmit was born in Walton, N.Y., and raised in Gouverneur. He developed his love of the outdoors while growing up and exploring the beautiful Adirondacks.

He attended SUNY Morrisville, where he earned AAS in Engineering Science.

He attended Clarkson University, earning a BS in Aeronautical Engineering and continued on to earn his MS and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.

For the past seven years he has worked in the Air Vehicles Directorate within the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
