CANTON – A free Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Car Show open to the public will take place in Nevaldine Hall at SUNY Canton on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A variety of electric vehicles and hybrids will be on display and a demonstration by SUNY Canton Prof. Brandon J. Baldwin will be presented at noon.

He will capture the exhaust of an internal combustion engine and then test the captured exhaust with an Air Quality sensor. Attendees will be asked to guess how long it will take for the exhaust of the gas-powered vehicle to fill a 10-gallon plastic bag.

Owners of EVs or hybrids are encouraged to bring their vehicles and share their experiences owning and operating them. Owners will answer questions on cost of purchase, maintenance, and charging, said Baldwin.

“There will be several EV and hybrid owners at the show who charge their electric vehicle with solar power that they generate. Ask them about their fuel costs,” he said.

The show is sponsored by the SUNY Canton Department of Automotive Technology.

Handouts will be available with links for more information on tax credits for new and used electric vehicles, which EV’s and hybrids are eligible, and about ecological impacts of mining for lithium and disposing of and recycling EV batteries.

“The EV and Hybrid Car Show is one small step in a long term transition to new automotive technologies. We know our students can play a major role in helping make this transition while enjoying interesting and rewarding careers in this new ‘green economy’,” said Baldwin.
