MASSENA -- The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will not conduct Canada goose banding in 2020 and will not hold the annual Wilson Hill Wildlife Management Area (WMA) goose drive during the State’s ongoing response to COVID-19.
In past years, DEC wildlife staff and volunteers herded geese along the length of the WMA into holding pens, where biologists determine the age and sex of the geese, then band and release them back into the marsh.
The goose drive is typically held toward the end of June when the geese have molted (lost their wing feathers) and are unable to fly.
