POTSDAM – Guest trombonist Sam Burtis will join the musicians of the select Crane Jazz Ensemble for a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5 in Hosmer Concert Hall, SUNY Potsdam.

The 19 members of the Crane Jazz Ensemble will select works from a program including such pieces as Paul Ferguson's "Blue Highways," Thad Jones's "Three and One," and Charles Mingus's "Nostalgia in Times Square."

Two student works will also be presented at the concert. Pianist Max Howard's original composition "The Hedgehog's Dilemma" will be performed alongside trombonist Andy Van Ness's jazz arrangement of "Maria," the well-known song from Leonard Bernstein's musical "West Side Story."

The Crane Jazz Ensemble is led by Bret Zvacek, whose composition "Three Miles" will also be performed.

Guest artist Sam Burtis will join the band on trombone for the performance. He has been a freelance lower brass player, arranger, composer, music director and educator in New York City since 1967.

He has been affiliated with the likes of The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Gil Evans, Charles Mingus, Lee Konitz, and Tito Puente.
